Pilots and Avgeeks share a special bond which can usually be described in one word.... Passion.  In today's world, it's not uncommon to find pilots that are making their way back into the sky after an extended hiatus.  What is less common is to come across a pilot that after being "bitten" by the flying bug, immersed himself into the journey that included earning his private and instrument ticket, the purchase of a plane, and taking trips that previously were only dreams.  That's when the story makes a 180 degree turn.  Because in this case, the pilot voluntarily decided it was time to walk away.

Listen in to this week's episode of SimpleFlight Radio as Marc and Al sit down with Kirke Machon, a Chicago-based GA pilot that embarked on and completed a journey that most only dream about.  And once the dream was complete, had the strength and conviction to walk away.

Great story from Kirke Machon; and what a great guy he is. The most important part of the story (in my humble opinion) was about the support he received from the flying club. As a former member of LEFC (Leading Edge Flying Club), it is worth pointing out how it is an outstanding group of some 85 members who have flown every conceivable craft from balloons, to commercial jets. They rate from observers, to flight instructors, to pilot examiners. Totally awesome. The feeling of empowerment and enablement I got from attending monthly breakfasts was every bit as important as my wife's approval and a solvent checking account ;-)

But, as Kirke relates, lives and missions change. Now, I find myself living in SW Florida with different weather, terrain, and airspace. My last flight was in late 2016. If I still lived in the Chicago area, I would be interested in tagging along in the right seat. Where I live now, I can't find a replacement for LEFC. Still, I maintain my membership in EAA and AOPA, and subscribe to Flying Magazine for my latest dose of Rob Mark's articles. It's hard to just walk away from it all. That is another part of the story.

BTW, Marc & Al, has anyone told you that is a real catchy intro you guys use for the blog? Keep up the great work!
